making meals in your motorhome

Cooking in a compact Kitchen

A luxury motorhome from Priory comes with all the bells and whistles. In one of our full-featured homes on wheels, camping doesn’t mean compromise and you’ll be able to enjoy all the creature comforts of home. Well, most of them.

As spacious and well designed as modern motorhomes are these days, they aren’t as roomy as your house. Clever use of space mitigates this a little, but in order to make the best use of what’s available, you’ll also have to bear in mind that there’s a little less room than you have at home. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the kitchen.

A motorhome kitchen is usually a triumph of design. It’s amazing how much can be fitted into the available space and you’re not likely to find much you can’t cook in there. To get the best out of of your mobile kitchen, however, you may have to make some adjustment to your usual meal prep’ habits and learn to cope with less elbow room.

Clean up as you go

With work surfaces at a premium, you don’t want to clutter that precious space unnecessarily. Rather than grabbing a new utensil, rinse and dry the one you just used. Peel your vegetables only a piece of kitchen roll, so that you can pick it up and bin it straight away with ease.

Plan your meals in advance

With space being at such a premium, you don’t want to waste valuable fridge, cupboard and countertop space with food you’re not going to use. With this being the case, do your shopping with specific meals in mind, buy only what you need and don’t be tempted by multi-buy offers. It’s not a bargain if you can’t store it and end up throwing it away!

Consider your resources while making meals

If you’re on a decent campsite, you may well have access to unlimited water, electric hookups and gas top ups, but off such sites, you’ll only have the resources you take with you. Your water tank, your gas bottle and your leisure battery all have a finite capacity, so if you’re going to be unable to top these up for a while, be careful about how much gas, water and electricity you use when making meals.

One pot meals work well

Motorhomes make all year, all weather touring and enjoyable experience. There’s something wonderful about spending a day out in the cold and coming into a lovely warm luxurious space. A bubbling hot pan of freshly made stew, maybe with dumplings is just as welcoming on a cold day and it’s a perfect meal to cook in a motorhome. With just one big pan and very little preparation, stews, chilli’s, curries, risottos and casseroles are amongst a wide array of simple meals that can be easily and quickly prepared.

Today’s evening meal can be tomorrow’s lunch

If you’ve gone to all the trouble of preparing a tasty meal, then it makes sense to include leftovers in your meal prep’ plan. Taking a few plastic airtight containers along with you allows you to enjoy an additional tasty meal tomorrow with no preparation at all, simply pop it in the microwave et voila! You can spend less time in the kitchen and more time doing the things you booked a motorhome to enjoy.
